In worst August in 16 years, vehicle sales in Brazil fall 5.8% – Fenabrave

By · September 2, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The sales of new vehicles fell 5.8% last month against August 2020, reaching the lowest volume for the month in 16 years as a reflection of the lack of cars in the dealerships.

In total, 172,800 units were sold, among passenger cars, light utility vehicles, such as pickups and vans, trucks, and buses, according to the balance sheet released on Wednesday by Fenabrave, the association that represents the dealers.

In the worst August in 16 years, vehicle sales in Brazil fall 5.8%.

Compared to July, the decrease was 1.5%, thus completing the third consecutive month of decline in placements.

Such a low volume has not been registered for the month since August 2005, when sales totaled 151,600units.

Since the beginning of the year, accumulated sales reached 1.42 million vehicles last month, 21.9% more than in the same period in 2020. However, the comparison base is weak since the automobile trade had to be suspended upon the arrival of the pandemic in the country.

The problem now is the lack of components, especially electronics, which paralyzes assembly lines and causes, as a consequence, a shortage of cars in dealerships.

Commenting on the result, the president of Fenabrave, Alarico Assumpção Júnior, said that the pace of sales is being dictated by the delivery capacity of automakers. “Part of the vehicles registered in August are sales made in July. This delivery period became longer because of the industry’s difficulties,” he commented.

Market leader Fiat had 23.1% of the accumulated sales since January in cars and light commercials. In sequence come to Volkswagen, with 15.5% of the market, General Motors (10.8%), and Hyundai (9.4%).
