Flu Beat Goiás 2×1 in Brasileirão: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fluminense came from behind to beat Goiás 2-1 last night and stretch their unbeaten run to seven games in the Brasileirão. The three points take the Tricolor up to sixth place for the time being, although this afternoon’s results could see them slip down the table slightly.

Goiás were the better side in the first half as Flu struggled to create chances. Diego Cavalieri was forced into action to deny Roni before William Matheus gave the home side the lead on 36 minutes.

Walter played the ball into the area, Roni flicked it on and Matheus’ first time strike found the far corner of the net. Flu coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo made two changes at half-time to lend his side a more attacking edge.

Youngsters Eduardo and Igor Julião came on for Diguinho and Bruno. Just seven minutes after the restart, Flu were level. Rhayner crossed, Sóbis laid the ball to Jean whose shot hit the post and bounced back off goalkeeper Renan’s head and into the back of the net.

Rafael Sóbis was not done there. With six minutes remaining, Felipe found Biro Biro down the left flank. The latter’s low cross was met by Sóbis who converted the winning goal. Fluminense are finally looking up the table rather than over their shoulders at the relegation zone.

Also in action last night, Botafogo lost 1-0 to Ponte Preta at the Maracanã. The defeat leaves the Alvinegro even further behind in their quest for the Brasileirão title and the side could slip to third depending on today’s results.
