Flamengo Clinches Carioca Championship After Goalless Draw With Fluminense

Flamengo secured the Carioca Championship title on Sunday after a scoreless draw against Fluminense at Maracanã Stadium. The team advanced with a 3-1 aggregate score from both legs of the final match.

Flamengo dominated the full 90 minutes of play, particularly in the first half. The team found the net twice during the second half, but officials disallowed both goals due to rule violations.

Flamengo created danger immediately in the first minute when Plata’s header struck the crossbar. The match then turned physical with numerous fouls from both sides. Fluminense managed their first shot only at the 19-minute mark when Renê fired a ball that goalkeeper Rossi saved.

Rubro-negros nearly scored at the 24-minute mark. Fluminense goalkeeper Fábio attempted a dribble but lost possession to Plata. The goalkeeper recovered quickly enough to prevent a goal.

Moments later, Plata received another pass in the penalty area but shot directly at defender Thiago Silva. Flamengo maintained pressure and created another scoring opportunity at the 32-minute mark.

Fluminense focused primarily on defensive positioning to maintain the goalless draw heading into halftime. Fluminense showed more offensive intent after the break and reduced Flamengo’s control.

The Tricolores threatened at the 16-minute mark when Cano connected with a cross but headed poorly wide of the target. Rubro-negros maintained possession but struggled to break through the organized Fluminense defense.

They circulated the ball around the penalty area but lacked the final decisive pass. Fluminense mounted late pressure seeking the goal that would force a penalty shootout. Keno fired a shot that required a strong save from Rossi.

Flamengo maintained composure despite the pressure and scored twice through Plata and Michael, though officials disallowed both goals. Nonetheless, Flamengo celebrated their championship victory at Maracanã.
