Experts warn Argentina could lose 40% of its beaches -scientific report

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – An international report warns that Argentina could lose up to 40% of its beaches by 2100 due to climate change. The negative impact of pollution would severely affect several major tourist destinations, especially during summer vacations.

The report, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, highlights the impacts of climate change. It reached several conclusions: one of them is that several countries could lose up to 40% of their beaches by 2100.

Biologist Fabricio Ballarini estimated that “4,000 kilometers of coastline will be lost in 78 years” and elaborated on the report’s details published in the scientific publication Nature Climate Change.

Argentina is among the ten most affected countries in this group of nations at risk of losing their coasts. He also warned that Argentina’s beaches would lose 100 meters of sand in the next 30 years.

On the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires, one of the most affected areas in the country, up to two meters of the beach will be lost each year. However, climate experts also warn that the impact could hit various parts of Entre Ríos province, through which the Ibicuy and Paraná rivers flow.

“The beach acts as a kind of barrier to contain storms and the onslaught of the sea, and the more extensive the sandy terrain, the smaller the impact,” Ballarini said of the effects of this climate change-related phenomenon.

The study, published in Nature Climate Change, compiled decades of data from experts in the United States and China. This is the first time scientists have demonstrated that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (AC) is experiencing acceleration.

The study used satellite measurements of sea surface height and data collected by the global Argo ocean buoy array (fully operational since 2007) to detect a trend in the speed of the upper Antarctic Ocean that had previously eluded scientists.
