Eletrobras Powers Brazilian Stock Surge as Foreign Investors Watch Cautiously
Brazil’s B3 stock market grabbed attention on August 7, 2025, when the Ibovespa index surged 1.48% to reach 136,527.61 points. This marked the fourth day of gains and a recovery past the crucial 136,000-point mark.
The underlying story centers on renewed optimism from big company earnings, combined with cautious steps by policymakers and broader market forces at home and abroad.
The day’s rally started with Eletrobras, Brazil’s giant energy company. It posted an adjusted net profit of R$1.47 billion for the second quarter—up 43% from last year and a clear reversal from earlier losses.
The company’s management, focusing on cost cuts and better efficiency, restored investor confidence. Eletrobras shares closed almost 10% higher, making it the most important driver for the Ibovespa’s rise.
The company’s announcement of a R$4 billion interim dividend reinforced that it has cash to reward shareholders. Other companies such as gym chain Smart Fit and education group Cogna also reported better-than-expected results and saw their shares advance.

By contrast, Minerva Foods disappointed investors with weak earnings; its shares dropped, showing how quickly market sentiment can shift on poor numbers.
A major external story lies with global investors. While some Brazilian investors bought into the rally, data showed continued outflows of foreign capital during July.
International buyers, once strong supporters of Brazil’s markets, remain cautious since global risks linger—from US and China trade tariffs to political tension in major economies.
The Brazilian central bank weighed in, stating it had not ended its campaign of raising interest rates but only paused it. This reassured investors that inflation remains a top concern, while making clear that fast rate cuts were unlikely.
In trade policy, President Lula chose not to retaliate immediately against new US tariffs. Instead, he kept negotiations open, aiming for a better deal rather than starting a trade fight.
Technical analysis supports the sense of a growing, though still careful, recovery. On the daily chart, major technical indicators like the MACD and RSI confirmed the market’s strong momentum.
The Ibovespa closed near the upper edge of its volatility band, signaling room for further gains but also the risk of a pause if the rally overheats. The so-called Global Liquidity Index, tracking global money flows into markets, showed a synchronized uptick, backing the rally.
Volume—the number of shares traded—spiked, confirming heavy institutional participation. The four-hour chart told the same story: rising prices and firm buying interest.
International markets were mixed. American investors watched for both interest rate cuts and new tariffs, with the Nasdaq hitting a record even as other US indices slipped. Europe’s main index rose after rate cuts meant to support growth. In Asia, cautious optimism reigned.
The real story is of a market that wants to come alive again, powered by homegrown companies delivering results, while global investors still watch from the sidelines, waiting for clearer signals.
Brazil’s stock market rally reflects a bet that local fundamentals can outshine external doubt—at least for now.
