Colombian arrested in Brazil on extradition request from Spain

By · November 29, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In a joint operation by the Federal and Highway Police, the Colombian was arrested in the city of Miranda, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, bordering Paraguay and Bolivia.

“According to the Spanish authorities, the prisoner is suspected of international drug trafficking and had been a fugitive for over 10 years,” the Federal Police reported in a statement in which it did not identify the alleged drug trafficker.

The Brazilian Federal Police on Sunday arrested a Colombian fugitive in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul on Interpol’s “red list.”

However, Brazilian media reported that the man is Humberto Flórez Morales.

According to the Federal Police, “the request for preventive detention for extradition purposes was made by Interpol in the capital Brasilia based on Red List information provided by the Spanish authorities.”

The arrest was coordinated by the Interpol Cooperation Center in São Paulo, with the support of the international organization’s headquarters in Brazil and Spain.

The arrest warrant was issued by the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the detainee, currently in the city of Corumbá, on the border with Bolivia, will be transferred to Campo Grande, the regional capital, “until his final extradition to Spain”.
