Cholera kills two people in northern Mozambique

On Tuesday, September 27, Health authorities announced that two people have died and ten others have been hospitalized due to an outbreak of cholera in the district of Lago, Niassa, in northern Mozambique.

The victims who died arrived at the treatment center of Cóbue, transferred from the village of Ngofi, with acute diarrhea and vomiting, according to the chief medical officer of Niassa province, Narciso Rondinho, quoted by the daily newspaper Notícias.

Without giving dates, he said that the center for treatment of diarrheal diseases in the administrative post of Cóbue was created after the outbreak of cholera in the region.

The chief physician of Niassa also said that at the outbreak of the disease, at least 70 people were admitted to that center, of which 63 were discharged from the hospital.

Meanwhile, health authorities in Manica province, in central Mozambique, recorded one death and suspected that it was caused by cholera.

“Samples were taken from the registered cases, and they were sent to the Provincial Hospital in Chimoio,” said Moacite Ibo, head of public health in Manica.

Cholera is a disease that causes severe diarrhea, which is treatable but can cause death by dehydration if not promptly combated – and is caused primarily by the ingestion of food and water contaminated by a lack of sanitation networks.
