Today’s Focus

Chilean stocks edged higher on Friday 9 October. The IPSA, the benchmark index of the Santiago exchange, rose 0.2% to 11,043.36 points and gained 1.2% over the week.

Chile is the world’s largest copper producer, so the metal’s rise matters. The CPER copper fund rose 2.15% and Southern Copper 5.31% in New York.

The peso gained modestly. The dollar closed at 975.06 pesos, down 0.40%, within a day’s range of about 972 to 983, according to RT.

What matters today. Copper and Brazilian optimism supported Chilean shares, but thin trading kept the gain small.

01 The session in one read

The IPSA closed at 11,043.36 points, up 0.2% from Thursday’s 11,024.22. Quiñenco, the holding company of the Luksic family, rose 4.5%, and Copec, the fuel and forestry group, rose 3.3%, according to Diario Financiero.

Volume was modest at CLP 136.7 billion across all domestic shares. Brazil’s rally set the regional tone: the Bovespa gained 1.4% and Wall Street rose between 0.6% and 0.8%.

The iShares MSCI Chile ETF (ECH), the New York fund for Chilean shares, rose 0.13% to US$37.73.

Assessment — A calm day with copper support MEDIUM

The index move was small, but the week was solid at 1.2%. Copper-linked names did the work: Southern Copper rose 5.31% and Freeport-McMoRan 3.58% in New York.

The peso moved with copper: a copper rally normally helps the currency, and it did on Friday.

03 Why it moved: copper and the region

Copper was the clearest driver. The CPER fund and Chilean-exposed miners in New York rose together. We found no verified Friday report of the London settlement, so we do not quote it.

Brazil’s rally lifted the whole region. When the Ibovespa jumps on a political change, funds often buy Latin American shares as a group.

Oil eased after Trump said the US would not strike Iran before the 3 November midterms. That helps Chile, which imports most of its fuel.

04 The day’s movers

Stock Ticker Change Note
Quiñenco QUINENCO +4.5% Luksic family holding
Copec COPEC +3.3% Fuel and forestry
Banco de Chile ADR BCH +0.36% Bank

The first two moves are from Diario Financiero’s Santiago close. The ADR moves are from New York (RT).

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
Ibovespa Brazil +1.38%
IPC Mexico +1.63%
IPSA Chile +0.20%
Merval Argentina -0.16%
COLCAP Colombia +0.21%
S&P 500 United States +0.59%

Chile was in the middle of the pack, ahead of Argentina and behind Brazil and Mexico.

06 The technical picture

The IPSA is holding above 11,000 points for a second session after Thursday’s close of 11,024. The index had fallen below 11,000 on 7 October, so the recovery above it is the week’s main technical gain.

For the peso, 975 compares with a close near 990 on 2 October, according to RT.

What Prediction Markets Say

Kalshi, a US exchange regulated by the CFTC (the US commodities regulator), priced no change at the Central Bank of Chile’s October rate decision at 88%, with small probabilities for a cut or a rise (28,371 contracts traded, read at 8:24 pm ET on 9 October).

These prices are bets on the central bank’s next move, not forecasts.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

07 What to watch

  • Copper: A confirmed London price rise would keep Chilean miners in favour.
  • The peso: A hold below 980 would extend this week’s recovery from 990 a week ago.
  • Central Bank: Prediction markets expect no change in October.
  • Brazil’s runoff: The 25 October vote is the main regional event for Chilean stocks.
