Brazil’s Federal Treasury servants approve strike

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Federal Treasury inspectors on Thursday, December 23, announced a strike following a meeting of the National Auditors Union (SINDIFISCO).

SINDIFISCO chairman Kleber Cabral said that the mobilization will begin next Monday, December 27. He explained that most inspectors will be on strike, with the exception of the customs area, where activities will continue, albeit at a reduced level.

With the approved strike, standard operations may have a great impact on imports and exports, since it affects the bodies in charge of controlling the entry and exit of goods.

Cabral stressed that the entry and exit of travelers from the country will not be affected.

“Customs will not be suspended, it will be a standard operation, an increase in rigor, which will ultimately take longer, directed at the import and export of cargo. There will not be any kind of impact on travelers or passengers,” Cabral said. As for all other areas, the decision is to strike, such as the Federal Treasury’s information flow and service systems.

Support to employees surrendering their positions in the institution was also approved during the union meeting. Yesterday, 1 of the 10 Treasury supervisors resigned from his post.

Chief of Staff Ciro Nogueira and the Federal Treasury Secretary are expected to meet next Monday to discuss the situation.

READJUSTMENTS TO PUBLIC SERVANTS

President Jair Bolsonaro is considering allocating part of the funds set aside in the Budget for civil servants to the Federal Treasury.

“If we are to grant a linear raise, we will grant a 0.6% raise for everyone within these R$2 billion (US$353 million). We do not want to be unfair, neither for more nor for less,” the President said during the weekly live stream on Thursday, December 23.
