Brazilian Neuroscience Graduate Gabriela Lopes Joins NIH-Funded Health Study in Miami

(Sponsored) Gabriela Lopes, a graduate in Behavioral Neuroscience from Nova Southeastern University, is contributing her skills as a Clinical Research Coordinator for a NIH-funded study established to support healthcare access and HIV prevention in Miami’s underserved communities.

The study focuses on improving physical and mental health outcomes, increasing HIV testing, and providing PrEP education in predominantly Black communities across eight Miami zip codes. The study is expected to reach an estimated 20,400 U.S. residents.

Addressing HIV in underserved communities is essential to breaking down barriers to healthcare access, ensuring timely testing and treatment, and reducing transmission rates.

According to the U.S. Department of State, “HIV/AIDS remains a serious threat to global health security and economic development.” The CDC adds, “The United States aims to eliminate HIV as a global public health threat by 2030. This work is far from done.”

Key aspects of the study include:

1. Mobile health units providing on-site care and testing in high-impact areas.
2. Economic stimulus through vouchers redeemable at local businesses for study participants.
3. Comprehensive data collection on healthcare accessibility, mental health conditions, and socio-economic factors.
