Brazilian Coffee Exports Soar to New Heights Amid Logistical Challenges

Brazil’s coffee industry has achieved a remarkable feat in 2024, exporting a record-breaking 46.4 million 60-kg bags of coffee. This impressive figure surpasses the previous record set in 2020 by 3.78%.

The surge in exports comes despite ongoing logistical hurdles at Brazilian ports. The country’s coffee exporters have demonstrated exceptional resilience and creativity in the face of adversity.

They’ve employed alternative shipping methods, such as break bulk cargo, to fulfill their international commitments. This adaptability has allowed Brazil to maintain its position as a global coffee powerhouse.

November 2024 saw a 5.4% increase in coffee exports compared to the same month in 2023. The industry shipped 4.662 million bags, generating a staggering $1.343 billion in revenue.

This represents a 62.7% jump in foreign exchange earnings from the previous year. The first five months of the 2024/25 coffee year have been particularly fruitful for Brazilian exporters.

They’ve shipped 22.017 million bags, earning $5.955 billion. These figures mark increases of 16.5% in volume and 61.4% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

However, the road to success has not been smooth. Exporters have faced significant challenges due to inadequate port infrastructure. Delays, schedule changes, and cargo rollovers have plagued the industry throughout the year.

By October, these issues had resulted in 1.717 million bags of coffee failing to ship as planned. The financial impact of these logistical problems has been substantial.

Exporters have incurred additional costs of R$30.4 million in 2024 due to extra storage fees, detentions, and other port-related expenses. This situation underscores the urgent need for improvements in Brazil‘s logistics infrastructure.

Despite these obstacles, Brazilian coffee continues to find eager buyers worldwide. The United States remains the top importer, purchasing 7.419 million bags in the first eleven months of 2024.

Germany follows closely, importing 7.228 million bags during the same period. The industry’s success extends beyond traditional markets.

Mexican imports of Brazilian coffee have surged by 177.3%, while Vietnam has increased its purchases by an astounding 389.4%. These trends highlight the growing global demand for Brazilian coffee.
