Brazil: Service sector grows 0.9% in September, says IBGE

The service sector grew 0.9% in September compared to August, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) Monthly Services Survey. It is the 5th consecutive positive result. Year-to-date, the increase is 8.6%.

The data were released by the institute this Friday (11.Nov.2022).

In the last 12 months, the sector recorded an increase of 8.9%, a slight variation compared to August, when the rate was 9%. The results indicate the maintenance of a downward trajectory that started in April 2022, when the accumulated was 12.8%.

When comparing the result of September 2022 with the same period last year, the service sector advanced 9.7%. The increase is mainly due to the sectors of transport, auxiliary transport services and mail, which registered an increase of 15.3% in the interval.

According to the IBGE, the increase of 0.9% was accompanied by 3 activities: information and communication (2.0%), services provided to families (1.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%). On the other hand, the transport sector and other services registered declines of -0.1% and -0.3%, respectively.

In the services provided to families, there was an increase in the revenue of restaurant companies; hotels; catering and fitness activities. In the administrative and complementary professional services sector, the rise came from consulting in business management, management of intangible assets; and organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions, among others.

The increase in revenues from information and communication services was verified in portals, content providers and other information services on the Internet.

The IBGE recorded expansion in the volume of services in September 2022 in 19 of the 27 federation units. The biggest increases came from Rio de Janeiro (0.7%), followed by Santa Catarina (2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%) and São Paulo (0.1%).

TOURISM AND TRANSPORT

The indicator of tourist activities increased by 0.4% in September, compared to August. In comparison with the same period in 2021, the increase was 22.5%. While in the year, there was an increase of 36.9%.

According to the IBGE, the increase in the tourist segment was driven by the increase in revenue from companies operating in air transport; car rental; restaurants; hotels; catering services; and collective passenger road.

The volume of passenger transport registered expansion of 1.6% in September compared to the immediately previous month in the seasonally adjusted series. In August, the rate dropped 0.5%. With the September result, the sector is 1.6% above the level of February 2020 and 21% below February 2014, the highest point in the historical series.

On the other hand, the volume of cargo transport had a negative variation of 0.5% in September 2022.
