Brazil’s Prosecutor General asks that 12 of the 916 arrested demonstrators be released
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) sent a request to Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes to release 12 protesters arrested on suspicion of involvement in the actions that resulted in acts of vandalism on January 8 in Brasilia.
The process is under secrecy.
According to the request, the preventive arrests – with an indefinite term – would be converted into precautionary measures.
This includes a ban on visiting military establishments, with a minimum distance of 500 meters from the sites, and restricting contact between other investigated parties.
Even at liberty, the protesters will still be prohibited from accessing social networks.
The manifestation of the PGR occurred after the request for release by the defense of the prisoners, who respond to crimes of less offensive potential, such as incitement to crime and criminal association.
The combined sentences do not exceed four years.
The lawyers allege that the prisoners were not participating in the demonstrations but were camping in front of the Army Headquarters in the Federal District.
Another allegation of the defense is that some of the people held in prison are elderly and have chronic diseases.
PROFILE OF THE PROTESTERS
A survey by West shows that at least 34 elderly protesters remain imprisoned.
Among them is a man from the state of São Paulo who is about to turn 75.
The youngest, meanwhile, is a boy from Alagoas, who turned 18 seven months before the protests. For women, the range is from 20 to 70 years old.
Today there are 611 men in Provisional Detention Center II and 305 women in the Women’s Penitentiary.
All are in the Papuda Complex.
Moreover, of the released prisoners, 460 are wearing electronic anklets.
