Rio Metrô to Provide Lockers to Receive Online Shopping Orders
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Everyone knows how distressing it is to be notified that an order has been shipped but there is no one at home. Those traveling by subway in Rio de Janeiro will now have a solution to this problem: smart lockers for receiving orders will become available at stations.

The service is the result of a partnership between MetroRio and ‘CliqueRetire’ (“Click and Retrieve”) and eases the delivery of online purchases. The innovation also meets the demand of residents who live in areas restricted from delivery by the Post Office and private carriers, and individuals with no postal address. Each station will feature 80 locker doors for parcels.
When the parcel is delivered, the customer will be sent a QR Code to be scanned in the locker which will automatically open its door for parcel retrieval. There is no fee charged upon pickup at the station, but the online store may charge for delivery at the time of purchase.
According to MetroRio, more than 40 million products can be purchased on the Internet and picked up from lockers, and the platform is linked to the main e-commerce sites in Brazil.
In total, 38 stations will feature smart lockers. These are Pavuna, Eng. Rubens Paiva, Acari/Fazenda Botafogo, Coelho Neto, Colégio, Irajá, Vicente de Carvalho, Thomaz Coelho, Engenho da Rainha, Inhaúma, Maria da Graça, Triagem, Maracanã, São Cristóvão, Cidade Nova, Uruguay, Saens Peña, São Francisco Xavier, Afonso Pena, Estácio, Praça Onze, Central, Presidente Vargas, Carioca, Cinelândia, Glória, Catete, Largo do Machado, Flamengo, Cardinal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos, Cantagalo, General Osório, Nossa Senhora da Paz, Jardim de Alan, Antero de Quental, São Conrado and Jardim Oceânico.
According to Extra newspaper, CliqueRetire will also install 200 electronic lockers in the coming months in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, at ‘BR Mania’ convenience stores, housed inside Petrobras gas stations.
Most e-shops with a physical retail store now offer the option to purchase the product online for pickup at an outlet. This is the case of Magazine Luiza, B2W (Americanas, Submarino, and Shoptime) and Via Varejo (Ponto Frio, Casas Bahia, and Extra).
E-shops without a physical store are not excluded: recently, Mercado Livre started to allow orders to be picked up at post offices, facilitating purchases for those who do not have a fixed location or a way to collect them.
