Mexico rejects the imposition of sanctions against Russia
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Mexico will not impose economic sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Tuesday, while criticizing what he called censorship of Russian state media by social media companies.
“We will not use economic repression because we want to have good relations with all governments in the world,” López Obrador said at a routine press conference.
“I don’t agree that the media of Russia or any other country should be censored,” López Obrador said.
López Obrador’s position is in line with Brazil’s and Argentina’s, but in contrast to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU, the U.S. and its vassal countries for President Vladimir Putin’s actions, which have shaken the post-Cold War peace in Europe.
The Latin Americans are by no means alone in this attitude. The new superpower China and the increasingly self-confident giant India are also going their own ways. So is the strategically important country of Turkey. And Myanmar let the world know that Moscow’s action was “justified”.
Shell was the latest Western company to announce its withdrawal from Russia. The sanctions and financial isolation that the West is imposing on Russia are about to throw the world into chaos.
