Brazil: congressman submits request for a public hearing on censorship
Congressman Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO), a member of the Federal Chamber’s Communication Commission, requested the convening of a public hearing to discuss the issue of censorship in Brazil.
Gayer claimed that the country is experiencing political persecution and that people are imprisoned simply for expressing their opinions.
The purpose is to hear from journalists and communicators who have been censored, blocked on social networks, or prevented from doing their jobs for their opinions.
Since the opening of the fake news inquiry at the Supreme Court (STF) in 2019, several people have been investigated, and there have been arrests and blocking of profiles of journalists and deputies.
Among those invited to the public hearing are former Justice Marco Aurélio Mello, jurist Ives Gandra Martins, journalist Allan dos Santos, Bárbara Destefani from the Te Atualizei webpage, Zoe Martins, a fired commentator from Jovem Pan, and Ana Paula Henkel, a columnist from Revista Oeste.
According to Gayer, any opinion that does not agree with what the left considers appropriate is automatically considered a crime.
People have had their lives destroyed and their freedom of expression curtailed. Representatives of the major social networks will also be called to talk about the procedures used to ban a profile and how they decide what fake news is.
During the installation session of the Communication Commission, Gayer emphasized that for there to be freedom of speech, people must have the freedom to express their opinions without running the risk of being arrested or having their names involved in inquiries.
