At least eight dead after heavy rains in northern Brazil 

At least eight people, including four children, were killed on Sunday (12) in Manaus (the capital of the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas) by landslides caused by heavy rains.

The landslides hit a dozen houses in the Jorge Teixeira neighborhood in the eastern part of Manaus.

Rescue workers continue their search Monday amid suspicions that several more people may be buried under the mudslides.

The government of Manaus activated the crisis team after the events of Sunday evening.

According to authorities, the affected area is one of 62 in the Amazon capital classified as high risk.

The mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, and the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, have traveled to the affected areas in the last few hours to see the rescue efforts on the ground.
