AmSoc Rio August Events

RIO DE JANEIRO – The American Society of Rio de Janeiro (AmSoc Rio) promises its members and friends another entertainment and culture-filled month, bringing not just Americans and Brazilians, but people from all over the world together.

In August, AmSoc Rio’s calendar has some special as well as regular events, and some new additions that are set to begin this month. Lindsay Duval, the President of AmSoc Rio, points out that they have been working towards building upon their special sense of community and a “home away from home organization” by holding regular gatherings.

This month’s Happy Hour will be at Blue Agave in Ipanema, and is an opportunity for members and friends to get together in an informal atmosphere.

“We try to pick places that offer the ability to stand up and mingle. This month we are also inaugurating a host system where we make sure that new members are welcomed and introduced to other members,” says Duval, referring to their forthcoming Happy Hour on Wednesday, August 11th.

The event at Blue Agave, a Mexican Restaurant co-founded and run by two Americans, will have drink specials along with R$5 Mexican tapas and sampler platters that were a hit at the restaurant’s Cinco de Mayo party. During the Happy Hour, members will also get special discounts.

Celebrating American heritage, traditions and ideals, AmSoc Rio is a non-profit association founded in 1917, during World War I, for the purpose of maintaining the American community united in Rio.

The organization is now a leading foreign community organization in the world, dedicated to building cross-cultural relationships and contributing to the Rio community through social, educational and charitable activities, together with its members from many different countries.

AmSoc Rio gives its members various opportunities to bond and have fun together through its colorful events calendar each month, including well-known American traditions such as Thanksgiving and Halloween, as well as various special events.

Also in August, AmSoc Rio will hold the first of what will become a new monthly event: A Day in the Museum. Each month, the members will visit a new museum, accompanied by an English-speaking guide whenever possible.

The first museum on the itinerary is the world-famous MAC, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói, with a visit scheduled for Tuesday, August 24th. After the museum tour, the group will have lunch at Bistro MAC, a nice restaurant located at the museum that offers spectacular views of the Guanabara Bay and Rio de Janeiro.

Later the same day, AmSoc Rio has another event on its calendar that promises to be as eye-opening as it sounds interesting. At a Speaker Series event at Paissandu Club in Leblon, writer and journalist Julia Michaels will be talking about her experiences as a newly single person in Rio after the age of forty, and will read from the memoirs she has been writing.

AmSoc Rio will continue to organize regular and special events every month in order to offer valuable and memorable experiences to its members. “We will be having Cajun Night again this year, which was a huge success last year,” heralds Duval. “Our members who cook share their Louisiana-style dishes with us for new taste delights.”
