Alagoas and Santa Catarina Granted Waste Management Funds

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The municipalities of Alagoas and Santa Catarina will be granted funding by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) to implement and improve waste management in their cities. In Alagoas, the municipality to be funded is Arapiraca. The amount will be used for environmental education initiatives and specialized technical assistance to train waste collectors.

In Santa Catarina, the funds will also be used for training waste collectors from a consortium operating in 18 municipalities in the state. In all, over 520 thousand Brazilians will benefit from the initiatives in both states.

The actions are part of the ‘Lixão Zero’ program, which assists states and municipalities in the adequate waste disposal.

The ‘Nacional Lixão Zero’ Program is part of the National Policy for Solid Waste (PNRS) and, according to information from the Ministry of Environment, is part of the National Agenda for Urban Environmental Quality and “aims to subsidize states and municipalities in the management of solid urban waste, focusing on a final environmentally adequate disposal”.
