5G reaches 46% of Brazilian population in first year

One year after the start of 5G implementation in Brazil, the technology has been made accessible to 93 million people, or 46% of the country’s population, according to National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) data.

The 5G network is now operational in all capitals and cities with a population over 500,000, totaling 753 out of 5,568 municipalities.

However, approximately 54% of the population, or 109.5 million people, still lack access to this service.

Access to 5G requires compatible devices and a mobile data plan. Based on this, Conexis Brasil Digital estimates that roughly 10 million people have actual access to this technology.

The service providers were able to expand coverage faster than initial targets, due to the non-revenue model of the auction which encouraged faster investment.

Despite the significant progress, 5G implementation faces two key challenges.

Firstly, the release of the 3.5 GHz frequency currently occupied by satellite dish signals, preventing its deployment in about 4,000 municipalities.

Secondly, several cities lack laws that facilitate the installation of 5G compatible antennas.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s 3G and 4G coverage remains below the global average. Nearly 10% of Brazilians do not have access to these technologies.

The International Telecommunication Union states that the global average of inhabitants with 4G or 3G coverage is 95%.

Brazil, however, surpasses Africa where these networks are available to 83% of the population.
