Xóchitl Gálvez joins Presidential race as opposition candidate in Mexico

By · September 4, 2023 · 2 min read

Xóchitl Gálvez joins the Presidential race as the opposition candidate. On September 3, she became the “coordinator of efforts” for the Broad Front for Mexico.

She made the announcement at the Angel of Independence in Mexico City. Leaders of three opposition parties stood beside her.

Gálvez sees her run as a chance for a better Mexico. She serves as a senator and critic of President López Obrador.

She aligns with the PAN party in the Senate, although not officially affiliated.

Her nomination followed a complex selection. This involved collecting supporter signatures, debates, and polls.

Jorge Luis Preciado, a former PAN legislator, criticized the selection as biased.

Some opposition figures skipped the internal process. They labeled it as rigged to favor Gálvez. López Obrador called the process a sham.

Ceci Flores spoke at Gálvez’s event. She’s a Sonoran mother searching for her missing children since 2015.

Both women have sought and failed to meet the president.

“We’ll make Mexico limitless,” Gálvez said. “Months ago, people doubted us. Now, we present strong opposition. Together, we’ll reclaim hope,” she added.

“My golden rule: no slackers, thieves, or incompetents,” Gálvez concluded. “I demand 100% effort, honesty, and capability. With that, we’ll succeed.”

Mexican politics has long been a complex interplay between various parties. The PRI, or the Institutional Revolutionary Party, dominated for over 70 years.

In the early 2000s, the PAN, or National Action Party, rose to prominence. More recently, López Obrador’s MORENA party has led the government.

López Obrador won the 2018 election with a promise for transformation. He vowed to root out corruption and uplift people experiencing poverty.

His tenure has sparked heated debates over his methods and efficiency.

Gálvez’s Broad Front for Mexico unites diverse opposition. It seeks to challenge the current administration’s course.
