There are more than 870 teachers hired at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, distributed in all districts of the country and teaching from primary to secondary school.

Since the first hiring in 2020, salaries have been paid with delays of about six months.

In early January, Adilson Esperança led a representation of the teachers who met with the Minister of Education, Culture, and Sciences, Isabel Abreu.

In the meeting, they asked the government to “initiate efforts” to pay the salaries in arrears by the end of this month.

The teachers’ group spokesman also expressed concern over Finance Minister Génesio da Mata’s announcement in December about the need to terminate contracts with teachers as part of measures to reduce state spending.

Adilson Esperança said that the education minister has guaranteed that “contract teachers will not be fired.”

A source contacted by RFI confirmed that the teachers would be paid.
