Key Facts

Three visa families. Residency in Colombia for expats runs through three categories — Visitor (V), Migrant (M) and Resident (R) — issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Digital nomads. The V-type digital-nomad visa needs proof of remote income of roughly three times Colombia’s minimum monthly salary, plus health cover.

Migrant visas. M visas cover work, marriage to a Colombian, a pension (pensionado), or a qualifying investment such as buying property above a set threshold.

The resident visa. The R visa is the long-term goal, reached after holding an M visa for a set period, through major investment, or via a Colombian parent or child.

Apply online. Applications go through the Cancillería portal with apostilled, translated documents; thresholds shift yearly, so confirm current figures.

Residency in Colombia for Expats: The Visa Families

Residency in Colombia for expats is organised into three families. The Visitor (V) visa covers temporary purposes including digital nomads; the Migrant (M) visa is for people putting down roots; and the Resident (R) visa is the long-term, near-permanent status.

Each is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería), and the right one depends on your income, your ties to Colombia and how long you intend to stay.

The Digital-Nomad and Visitor Visas

The V-type digital-nomad visa suits remote workers and freelancers earning from abroad. You show consistent remote income of around three times the Colombian minimum monthly salary and valid health insurance.

Other V visas cover study, short work projects and similar temporary stays.

Migrant (M) Visas

M visas are the settling-in category: married to or in a recognised union with a Colombian, sponsored work, a pension (the popular pensionado route), or investment such as buying real estate above a published threshold.

An M visa is typically valid up to three years and is the usual stepping stone toward the resident visa.

Colombia Visa Types at a Glance

Type Who it’s for Leads to
Visitor (V) Digital nomads, study, short projects Renewal; not directly to R
Migrant (M) Work, marriage, pension, investment Resident (R) visa over time
Resident (R) Long-stayers, big investors, family of Colombians Indefinite stay, path to citizenship

From M to R: Permanent Residency

After holding an M visa for the required period (commonly several years, less for spouses of Colombians), you can apply for the R visa. Large qualifying investments and being the parent of a Colombian can also open the R route sooner.

The R visa grants near-permanent residence and starts the clock toward naturalisation.

Costs, Timelines and Using a Lawyer

Visa fees vary by category and are paid in two parts — a study fee and, on approval, the issuance fee — usually totalling a few hundred US dollars. Processing typically takes a few weeks once your file is complete.

The biggest delays come from documents: every foreign certificate must be apostilled and officially translated, and the Cancillería can ask for more.

Many expats use an immigration lawyer for M and R visas. It is not required, but it reduces rejections on investment, marriage and pensionado files, where the evidence is detailed.

How to Apply

Applications are made online through the Cancillería’s visa portal. Foreign documents must be apostilled and officially translated into Spanish, and decisions usually arrive within a few weeks.

Because income thresholds track the minimum wage and rules are tightened periodically, confirm the current figures and document list before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main residency visas in Colombia?

Three families: Visitor (V), Migrant (M) and Resident (R). The V covers digital nomads and short stays, the M covers work, marriage, pensions and investment, and the R is the long-term resident visa.

What does the digital-nomad visa require?

Proof of remote income from outside Colombia of roughly three times the national minimum monthly salary, plus valid health insurance and a clean record.

How do I qualify for permanent residency?

Hold a qualifying Migrant (M) visa for the required period, make a large qualifying investment, or be the parent of a Colombian, then apply for the Resident (R) visa.

Can I buy property to get residency?

Yes. Buying real estate above a published value can support a Migrant investment visa. Confirm the current threshold before relying on it.

Where do I apply?

Online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) visa portal, with apostilled and translated documents.

Do the income thresholds change?

Yes. They are pegged to Colombia’s minimum wage and adjusted yearly, and enforcement has tightened, so verify the latest figures.
