Why the Cédula de Extranjería Matters

For newcomers, the Cédula de Extranjería is the single most important card you will carry: it is the official ID that proves your legal status and is requested for almost every formal transaction.

Alongside it, the RUT identifies you to the tax authority. Together they let you bank, sign a lease, take a job and issue invoices.

Getting Your Cédula de Extranjería

Once your visa is issued you must register with Migración Colombia within 15 calendar days and apply for the cédula. You book an appointment online, pay the fee and attend in person for photographs and fingerprints.

The card is issued shortly afterwards and carries your unique foreigner ID number, which you will use everywhere.

Registering for the RUT at the DIAN

The RUT is handled by the DIAN, the tax authority, largely online. You register with your cédula details and receive your tax number and certificate.

Plan to show the cédula when opening accounts, signing leases, contracting utilities and starting a job; the RUT is requested for employment, invoicing and by many banks.

Landlords and employers increasingly verify both, so keep a printed RUT certificate and your cédula on hand.

Budget for the registration and card fees, payable before your appointment; the cédula is issued shortly after your biometrics are taken. The RUT itself is free to obtain from the DIAN online.

Your cédula’s validity is tied to your visa, so the two renew together. Note the expiry well ahead, because letting either lapse can complicate banking and contracts.
