The Puerto Aventuras mayor was arrested on Thursday 15 October 2026 on warrants for aggravated extortion, Quintana Roo’s state prosecutors (FGE) said. Two others were detained with him in a case that involves one vendor, on the prosecutors’ account.

Puerto Aventuras sits in the municipality of Solidaridad, the Playa del Carmen area that many foreign visitors and residents pass through. The case matters to outsiders because it concerns the everyday permits and fees that small businesses face in a tourist region.

The regional outlets Noticaribe and Vanguardia and the national paper El Financiero all carried the prosecutors’ account on 15 October. These are allegations only, and the prosecutor’s office stressed that the three detainees keep the presumption of innocence.

What the Puerto Aventuras Mayor Is Accused Of

The state extortion unit says the events ran from January to May 2026 at a business in the Puerto Maya neighbourhood. Municipal staff allegedly told the owner to regularise the business and report to Karla Paola “N”, an economic development official.

On 19 January the official allegedly asked the vendor to fill in a form and pay, or lose the goods. Prosecutors say the form was in fact free.

On 6 February several people arrived in two mototaxis, among them Jorge “N”. He allegedly said vendors must report to the official on the mayor’s orders or be “picked up”, with a threat of a beating.

On 11 February the vendor allegedly paid again, after being told the document gave protection while the mayor stayed in office. On 7 May Jorge “N” allegedly demanded an extra weekly payment, and weekly payments began.

Prosecutors then obtained arrest warrants from a control judge, who oversees suspects’ rights during the investigation stage. Vanguardia stresses it was not an arrest in the act, and the three await an initial hearing.

Who the People Named Are

Gilberto Gómez Martínez is the alcalde, or mayor, of Puerto Aventuras, and El Financiero calls him a Morena member. Morena is Mexico’s governing party, and prosecutors use the initial “N” for him and the other two.

Karla Paola “N” is described as an official of the local economic development directorate, the office that handles business permits. El Financiero identifies Jorge “N” as the mayor’s nephew, while Noticaribe’s account of the prosecutors’ statement quotes him only as saying that he and “his uncle” set the rules.

El Financiero recalls that in June 2025 a local journalist, Alfonso Lara, said armed men abducted, beat and threatened him after he criticised the mayor. He alleged the mayor ordered it, but no source links that complaint to this case or reports a ruling on it.

The Legal Path From Here

Under Article 19 of Mexico’s Constitution, a detainee cannot be held over 72 hours before a judge without a formal ruling, a vinculación a proceso. That ruling requires data showing a crime occurred and that the suspect probably took part.

The same article lists extortion among offences for which a judge orders pretrial detention automatically, though the judge decides how it applies here. The defence can contest the evidence at each stage, and no one has been convicted.

What It Means for You

Nothing in the sources reports any disruption to hotels, the marina, beaches or other tourist services in Puerto Aventuras after the arrests. Day-to-day services are run by municipal staff, although the sources do not say who is acting as mayor.

For residents and business owners, the case is a reminder to ask for permit prices in writing at the official municipal office. Extortion can be reported to the state prosecutor’s office, and the prosecutors say the form in this case cost nothing.

What Is Not Known

Prosecutors have not published the sum the vendor paid, and the sources do not say how much was collected in total. The result of the initial hearing was not available at the time of writing on the morning of Friday 16 October.

It is not yet clear whether the judge will order pretrial detention, or whether the three will give statements. No reaction from Morena or from the state government was found in the sources reviewed.

Vanguardia mentions complaints from traders in the plural, but the prosecutors’ account as reported describes a single vendor. Whether other traders have come forward is not established.
