Over 50 Percent of Argentines Disapprove of Alberto Fernández’s Management

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the survey, 50.4 percent of Argentines disapprove of President Alberto Fernandez’s administration, yet value his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, albeit by a small margin.

In parallel, the positive opinion of the Buenos Aires head of government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the main opposition leader, continues to grow and reached 43.9 percent. The difference between positive and negative assessments place him in the top position among political leaders nationwide, with 22.8 percent. The second on the list is Fernández with a positive differential of 3.4 percent.

The data are based on a survey conducted by the Management and Fit consulting firm in which the image of the main political leaders is assessed and citizens are asked about the management of the Frente de Todos, economic expectations and their main concerns. The survey was conducted between November 14th and 19th, among a resident population aged between 16 and 75, and with a total of 2200 reference cases surveyed.

With respect to the national management approval, 50.4 percent of Argentines disapprove of the President’s management, while 40.9 percent approve of it. Disapproval is mainly concentrated among respondents with higher levels of schooling, while approval is concentrated among those with lower levels of schooling. According to the survey, disapproval of the administration has increased over recent months. While in March, when the pandemic began, it stood at 42.7 percent, in November it rose to 50 percent.

The survey also shows the assessment of management specifically in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and in the province of Buenos Aires. A total of 59.3 percent of Buenos Aires city rsidents disapprove of Fernández’s management and only 33.3 percent approve of it. Among the citizens of the province of Buenos Aires, the approval rate has increased to 47.7 percent, while 46.4 percent disapprove.

Regarding the President’s management of the pandemic, most Argentines approve of it, 51.1 percent, while 45.4 percent disapprove. Over the past three months, approval levels remained stable, while in October there was an increase among those who disapproved, reaching 53 percent, and in November it dropped by eight percent.

In parallel, the image of the main leader of the opposition, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, continues to grow as do his approval rates. The Buenos Aires head of government has a negative image for 21.1 percent and a positive image for 43.9 percent nationwide. The differential yields a positive result of 22.8 percent. Alberto Fernández comes second with a negative rating of 37.8 percent and a positive rating of 41.1 percent. The differential is 3.4 percent.

Further down, in third place, is the ex-governor of Buenos Aires, María Eugenia Vidal. Her image is negative for 37.9 percent and positive for 40.9 percent. The differential is three percent. Vidal, Rodríguez Larreta and Fernández are the only three leaders who have a positive image differential in Argentina.

The fourth position is held by the Senator of Juntos por el Cambio Martín Lousteau with a positive and negative image differential of -0.7 percent, the Governor of Buenos Aires Axel Kicillof with -19.5 percent, Vice-president Cristina Kirchner with -22.7 percent and ex-president Mauricio Macri with -27.4 percent.

As far as the assessment of these leaders in the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires is concerned, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta holds the podium in both districts. In the city he governs, he has a 60.1 percent positive and a 17.8 percent negative rating. The differential is 42.4 percent. In second place is Vidal with a differential of 15.1 percent and in third place is Lousteau, with seven percent. The three leaders with the best rating in the Buenos Aires province are from Juntos por el Cambio.

In the province, Rodríguez Larreta has a differential of 25.4 percent, while President Fernández is in second place with 15.5 percent. In third place is Lousteau with 1.2 percent. The governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, comes in fifth place, behind his predecessor, María Eugenia Vidal, with -7.3 percent.

With respect to the survey conducted by the consulting firm on who is the main reference of the opposition, 29 percent considered that it is Rodríguez Larreta, 16.9 percent that it is ex-president Mauricio Macri, 10.2 percent said it is Patricia Bullrich, eight percent said it is Vidal, and 2.7 percent said that it is Miguel Pichetto.

When asked who holds the most power in the national government, 48.8 percent stated that Cristina Kirchner holds the most power and 34 percent said that it is Alberto Fernández.
