Uruguay will showcase its 2022 Carnival, the world’s longest, in Montevideo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The cultural director of the Montevideo City Council, María Inés Obaldía, assured on Tuesday morning, August 24, that everything is ready for the traditional Carnival in the Uruguayan capital in 2022.

In December 2020, the government suspended the Rey Momo celebrations in the South American country due to the health situation caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.

Obaldía said, “This carnival that we all want will come from the heart. It will be a cry for freedom, and it will give us the strength to continue with the ABC Plan and mobility. Also in the construction of infrastructures and cultural facilities. A solace for outside, a culture in all neighborhoods”.

The Uruguayan executive stressed, “At this moment, as we are, we will have Carnival. What has not yet been resolved, and what means complexity, is the issue of parades. We are still working on the logistics of the opening parade”.

MORE THAN FIFTY DAYS

The Carnival celebration in Uruguay is the longest globally, beginning in late January and ending in mid-March. For more than fifty days, Montevideo, the country’s capital, is dedicated to fun and tradition. Thus, on this day, you can find street parades, neighborhood stages, and drums in every street of the city.

The parade that generates the most interest is the popular Desfile de Llamadas, the largest celebration of the Afro-Uruguayan community.

The only thing that could slow down the Carnival would be a setback in the health situation caused by Covid-19.
