A Zamora bar attack in Mexico’s western state of Michoacán left four people dead and three wounded late on Friday 2 October. The state’s public security ministry confirmed the toll on 3 October, describing a direct gun attack between members of criminal cells.

State prosecutors say early findings point to a feud between drug cartels over trafficking and extortion. The killings come as Morelos, south of Mexico City, faces its own wave of cartel violence.

What happened at El Nuevo Quijote

Armed men burst into the El Nuevo Quijote bar in the Las Fuentes district at about 23:00, witnesses told state prosecutors. They fired assault rifles at customers listening to regional music, including narcocorridos, ballads that celebrate traffickers, EFE reported.

Three men and a woman died at the scene, and three wounded people were taken to hospitals in Zamora. Police were posted at the hospitals to prevent further attacks on them, according to EFE.

The army, the National Guard and the Guardia Civil, Michoacán’s state police, launched an operation to find the gunmen. The attackers fled in several vehicles.

Some outlets, including SinEmbargo, reported five deaths on Saturday. The official count from state authorities remains four.

Why prosecutors point to rival cartels

The state prosecutor’s office said the attack stemmed from disputes between cartels over drug production and trafficking. The rivalry also covers extortion of business owners, traders and transport operators, it said.

Federal authorities have identified three groups in Zamora: the CJNG, the Knights Templar and the Los Reyes cartel. They are among 16 cartels active across Michoacán’s 113 municipalities, EFE reported.

Zamora recorded 60 homicides between 1 January and 31 August 2026, according to state prosecutor data cited by SinEmbargo. Only the state capital Morelia, with 89, and Uruapan, with 69, recorded more, out of 447 murders statewide.

Morelos faces a separate cartel rivalry

There is no reported link between the Zamora bar attack and the killings in Morelos, several hundred kilometres to the south-east. Both, however, involve the CJNG competing with other groups for territory.

A string of high-profile murders has pushed Morelos authorities to review cartel activity, El Universal reported on 4 October. The victims include a judge, an army sergeant, a Spanish exchange student and two 17-year-old students shot in Cuernavaca on 26 September.

The CJNG and La Familia Michoacana operate across much of the state’s 36 municipalities, the paper said, citing an official criminal map. They compete with regional groups and 15 smaller cells, and eight people were killed in separate incidents on Thursday 1 October.

Morelos recorded 1,159 homicide victims from January to August 2026, Regeneración reported, citing SESNSP figures. It also has the country’s highest murder rates among teenagers and young adults, according to the same report.

President Claudia Sheinbaum asked the Interior Ministry on 28 September to contact the governor and the university rector. Background: Morelos Security Stepped Up After Two Students Are Shot Dead in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

The national picture

The violence runs against a falling national trend. Mexico’s daily average of intentional homicides fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 40.8 in August 2026.

That was the lowest August since records began in 2015, said the SESNSP, the executive secretariat of the national public security system. Thirty states recorded fewer homicides than in 2025, it added on 8 September.

Violence remains concentrated, though. Seven states accounted for 49.3 percent of homicides from January to August, with Morelos seventh at 5.3 percent.

What Is Not Yet Known

The Zamora victims have not been publicly identified, and no arrests had been reported by Sunday 4 October. It is also unclear which group carried out the Zamora bar attack, or whether a fifth victim died.

In Morelos, officials believe La Familia Michoacana or a local cell called Los Mayas killed the Cuernavaca students, El Universal reported. No arrest in that case has been reported.
