Market Report

IPC Gains 1.06% to 66,746.78 as Peso Firms | Mexico Market Report, Oct 12

Monday, October 12, 2026

Key Facts

  • Mexico’s S&P/BMV IPC index rose 1.06% to 66,746.78 points on Monday 12 October, the sixth advance in seven sessions and a gain of 3.79% for 2026.
  • Grupo Carso rose 4.4%, Inbursa 4.11% and Alpek 4.89%; but 417 shares fell against 238 that rose, so large caps carried the index.
  • The peso strengthened about 0.8% to 18.26 per US dollar, after closing at 18.41 on Friday.
  • Industrial output rose 3.5% in August from a year earlier, above the 2.6% forecast in RT’s calendar.
  • Prediction markets: Polymarket gives 76% to no change at Banxico’s November decision and 19.6% to a 25-basis-point cut (US$53,377 traded, read at 8:43 pm ET on 12 October). Bets, not forecasts.

Today’s Focus

Mexican stocks rose on Monday 12 October, when the exchanges of Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Colombia were closed for holidays. The IPC, the main index of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV), gained 1.06% to 66,746.78 points.

The peso also gained. It rose about 0.8% to 18.26 per US dollar, which makes Mexican assets dearer in dollar terms and lowers import costs.

Data from the national statistics office INEGI showed industrial output up 3.5% in August from a year earlier. Banco Base’s Gabriela Siller said global equity indices closed mixed on the day.

What matters today. Mexico was one of the few Latin American markets open, and it rose with a stronger peso, which helps US investors in Mexican shares and the EWW fund.

Assessment — Narrow rally, strong peso MEDIUM

The index rose while decliners outnumbered gainers by almost two to one. The variable to watch is whether broader buying joins the large caps.

The session read
The S&P/BMV IPC rose 0.55%, with breadth positive — 10 of 15 names higher. Financials led, while Telecom lagged.

03 Why it moved: a stronger peso and big caps

Breadth was weak. Of 678 shares traded, 238 rose, 417 fell and 23 were unchanged.

That means a handful of large stocks lifted the index. A stronger peso also helped US investors, with the EWW fund up 1.79% to US$73.24.

04 Industrial output beat forecasts

INEGI said industrial activity rose 3.5% in August from a year earlier on original figures, and 3.6% seasonally adjusted. On the month it rose 0.6%, after a 0.5% gain in the previous month.

Construction rose 7.5% on the year, manufacturing 3.2% and energy and water 1.6%, while mining fell 0.8%. RT’s calendar had a forecast of 2.6% for the annual figure and a prior reading of 2.7%.

06 The regional scoreboard and technical picture

Mexico was one of the few Latin American markets open. Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Colombia had national holidays and no trading.

The S&P 500 closed at 7,807.24, down 0.06%. Monday was Columbus Day in the United States, when bond markets were shut.

The IPC closed above 66,700 after finishing Friday at 66,048.57. The peso at 18.26 is stronger than Friday’s 18.41.

Trading was thin because US bond markets were shut, and we found no other confirmed reason for the size of the peso’s gain.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a prediction market, priced no change at Banxico’s November decision at 76%, a 25-basis-point cut at 19.6% and a rise of 25 basis points at 3.8%, with US$53,377 traded (read at 8:43 pm ET on 12 October). Kalshi, a US exchange regulated by the CFTC (the US commodities regulator), priced no change at 73% (34,941 contracts traded).

These prices are bets on the central bank’s next move, not forecasts.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

07 What to watch

  • Breadth: Broader buying would confirm the rally; more decliners would signal a narrow move.
  • The peso: A move back above 18.41 would reverse Monday’s gain.
  • Banxico: Prediction markets favour holding rates in November.
  • Third-quarter earnings: The first bank reports will test the market’s optimism.
