What’s in the show

The exhibition gathers more than 300 original items, flown in from Los Angeles and lent by Joplin’s own family. It is the first time this collection has travelled to Brazil.

Curated by MIS director-general André Sturm, the show leans personal rather than grand. You walk past handwritten letters and notes — many to her family — alongside performance photos and a wardrobe of vests, bracelets, necklaces, rings and her famous tinted glasses.

Her feather boa and stage costumes anchor the rooms. Together they sketch a portrait of the singer who would have turned 83 in January 2026, told through the small things she kept rather than the legend.

A room just for Brazil

The emotional center is a gallery devoted to Joplin’s love of Brazil. It revisits the weeks she spent in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival in 1970.

That trip came at a turning point in a short life — she died later that year, at 27. Seeing it through her own letters and photos makes the show feel less like a museum and more like a visit.

Hours, tickets and the free-Tuesday trick

The MIS opens Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday and holidays from 10 am to 6 pm. It closes on Mondays.

Standard entry is R$60 (about US$12), with half-price tickets at R$30. Tuesdays are free — but only at the physical box office, with no advance booking, so arrive early on free days.

Getting there and planning your visit

The museum sits at Avenida Europa 158, in the green, walkable Jardim Europa district. It is an easy add-on to an afternoon in the Jardins, near plenty of cafés and restaurants.

Allow at least an hour inside; the museum lets you linger up to an hour after the last entry. Weekday mornings are the calmest if you want the rooms to yourself, while Tuesdays draw the biggest crowds because they are free.

Why it’s worth it for newcomers

Big international shows like this are part of what makes São Paulo Latin America’s cultural capital. For a newcomer, the MIS is also a low-pressure way to spend a grey winter afternoon and meet the city’s creative side.

The museum’s permanent photography timeline and rotating film programming give you a reason to come back after Janis closes. Pair the visit with a walk through the Jardins and a long lunch, and you have an easy, memorable day out.
