Italy becomes digital ID poster boy in Europe

By · May 31, 2022 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In Italy, half the population already has the new biometric digital IDs (ID 2020), which allow people to conduct their affairs with the notoriously inefficient administration online.

But the new digital identities are said to be good for much more. Italians may soon be the most controllable among citizens of the larger European countries.

“Italy’s national digital ID system has reached the 30 million user mark,” reads a cheering announcement on May 9 from Biometric Update, the news service for corporate and administrative professionals in the ID sector.

The killer application enticing Italians en masse to get a biometric digital ID card is SPID, a digital gateway to Italy’s notoriously hard-to-access and inefficient analog government agencies.

Minister of Technological Innovation and Digital Transformation Vittorio Colao has said that the proliferation of digital IDs will make it possible to offer better and better administrative services.

The increase in the adoption of digital ID in the EU is not a trend limited to Italy. A recent report by Okta has unveiled similar leanings in Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.
