Intelligence agencies warn protests in France today could be three times bigger than last week

The protests in France against the pension reform approved by the president, Emmanuel Macron, ended this Tuesday (28) with 201 arrests throughout the country and 175 police officers injured, as confirmed by the country’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin.

Through a message on his Twitter account, Darmanin thanked the 13,000 agents mobilized to control this tenth day of protests, which gathered 740,000 people according to the authorities and more than two million according to unions, reports ‘Le Monde’.

Intelligence agencies are warning protests today could be three times larger than last week as more and more people stand against Macron.

When asked about the protests on Tuesday, US State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said that the United States respects the right to peaceful protest of all citizens but reiterated that “it is never appropriate to take violent action.”

In an attempt to mediate to prevent an eleventh call for a general strike, French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has invited the inter-union to a meeting.

“We collectively think that we should go there to make our proposals heard,” explained the secretary general of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT), Laurent Berger, the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ has picked up.

Despite this, the inter-union has called for another day of a general strike for Thursday, April 6, given “the lack of response from the Executive”, something which, in the opinion of the main French unions, “leads to a situation of tensions”.
