Guinea-Bissau, a small nation in West Africa, has undergone various political transitions since its independence from Portugal in 1973.

Known for its rich culture and biodiversity, the country has faced political instability challenges and has witnessed multiple coups.

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) has played a significant role in the nation’s history, leading the liberation movement against Portuguese colonial rule.

The nation has been working towards establishing a more stable political environment in recent years, with international bodies like the United Nations monitoring its progress.

Geraldo Martins has been named the new Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau by President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, following consultations with parliamentary parties after the June 4th legislative elections.

Martins takes over from Nuno Gomes Nabiam.

Previously, President Embaló had dissolved the government led by Nabiam, who confirmed his resignation to the media.

Martins, with a history in economics and finance, had also served as the vice president of PAIGC.

Educated in chemistry and physics in Moldova, Martins later earned a law degree in Bissau and a master’s in Public Management and Policy from a London university.

Despite multiple tenures as the Minister of Economy and Finance, Martins has expressed a profound interest in educational policies.

He has also held positions in the Guinea-Bissau government as the Minister of Science and Technology and the Minister of Education.
