A man has been charged with murder after a woman in her thirties was killed in Camopi, a remote Indigenous town in French Guiana. The town’s customary chief says it is the third killing there this year, though the prosecutor has not confirmed that count.

What We Know

The victim, a mother in her thirties, died between 23 and 25 September, according to Guyane la 1ère, the regional public broadcaster. France-Guyane, a local daily, reported that she was killed on 23 September in an outlying hamlet and found two days later.

The prosecutor’s office said the suspect was arrested, charged with murder while manifestly drunk, and remanded in custody on 27 September. France-Guyane reported that he is 22 and has admitted the killing.

In French law, being charged (mis en examen) means an investigating judge has found serious or consistent evidence, not that guilt is proven. We have not seen a statement from the suspect’s side.

An autopsy was carried out, but its findings have not been made public. A victim-support association has been assigned to the woman’s relatives.

At Least the Third Killing This Year

Siméon Monnerville, a Teko customary chief, says this is the third homicide in Camopi since January. Customary chiefs are traditional community leaders.

In one earlier case, a woman was shot dead by her husband, who is now in custody. In another, a woman is accused of killing her husband, France-Guyane reported.

The prosecutor’s office did not confirm the count when asked by Guyane la 1ère. The broadcaster said that, once counted, the death would be French Guiana’s 45th homicide of 2026.

The Mayor and the Chief Speak Out

Mayor Laurent Yawalou blamed alcohol and said it played a part in all three cases. “The young people of Camopi are losing their minds, I worry every day,” he told France-Guyane.

Monnerville said Camopi’s people want the same justice as people on the coast, and that families should be able to follow the judicial process. He has also complained that violence in Camopi receives little media attention.

The prosecutor, Aline Clérot, said her office had taken its responsibilities by having the suspect arrested, charged and jailed. A local health contract between the regional health agency and the town hall, covering pregnancy and parenting, is being set up, Guyane la 1ère reported.

Gold Mining and Isolation on the Oyapock

Camopi sits on the Oyapock river, which marks the border with Brazil, and it also hosts a French Foreign Legion post. Illegal gold miners, known by the Brazilian word garimpeiros, have long used the rivers around it.

A temporary barrier on the Camopi river, in place since 23 June, was lifted on 24 September because the dry season made it less effective, Guyane la 1ère reported. At the same time, soldiers and gendarmes launched Operation Bakra, a large push against illegal mining sites in the Camopi basin.

We have seen no official link between the killing and gold mining. The two stories are connected only by place: Camopi is a remote town where the customary chief says violence receives little attention.

What Is Not Known

The autopsy findings have not been made public, and no trial date has been announced. The prosecutor has not confirmed that this is Camopi’s third homicide of the year.

We have not seen any account from the suspect’s lawyer or family. He is presumed innocent until a court rules.

What It Means for Travelers and US Readers

French Guiana is an overseas department of France on South America’s north-east coast, and Camopi lies deep in its forest. Visitors should check current French government travel advice before any trip into the interior.

For US readers, the case shows how far the French state’s reach is tested in remote border towns. Local leaders say the justice system must reach these communities as well as the coast.
