Cape Verde with more tourists in the second quarter than in all of 2021
INE’s tourism statistics and guest movements revealed that Cape Verdean hotels registered a 688.5 percent increase in tourists in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2021.
For the whole of 2021, according to the data published by INE, the Cape Verdean hotel industry counted 169,068 guests, compared to 207,125 in 2020, in both cases – still under the effects of Covid-19 – far from the record of more than 819,000 tourists in 2019.
Between April and June, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin of tourists to Cape Verde, accounting for 31.8% of total arrivals, staying an average of 5.6 nights in the African country.

It was followed by Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and France, which accounted for 13.2%, 11.5%, 9.7% and 5.8% of total tourist arrivals in Cape Verde, respectively.
During the period, 786,727 overnight stays were recorded, representing an increase of 796.9% compared to the second quarter of 2021.
In terms of overnight stays, the United Kingdom led with 38.8%, followed by Germany with 12.6%, Portugal with 11.3%, the Netherlands with 9.8% and France with 4.6%.
In terms of islands, Sal is the most requested by tourists, with 57.9% of hotel nights in Cape Verde, according to INE data.
It was followed by the islands of Boa Vista with 21.3%, Santiago with 11.0% and S. Vicente with 5.4%.
In terms of overnight stays, Sal continues to rank first with 52.2%, Boa Vista with 38.4%, Santiago with 4.1% and S. Vicente Island with 3.0%.
“By country of habitual residence, 7.0% of arrivals and 3.9% of overnight stays were from Cabo Verde,” the INE report said.
According to the institute, hotels in Cabo Verde continued to be the establishments with the highest bed occupancy rate in the second quarter, at 52 percent.
“They are followed by vacation villages with 51 percent, flat hotels and guesthouses with the same percentage, 14 percent, and guesthouses and residences with the same percentage, 13 percent,” INE said.
The country hopes to more than double the number of tourists in the archipelago by 2022, reversing the downward trend of the last two years due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
In 2020, the first year of the Covid 19 pandemic, Cabo Verde recorded a historic 75 percent drop in tourist arrivals, or about 600,000 fewer tourists, down from a record 819,000 arrivals in 2019.
