Brazil’s Americanas stores to deliver food purchases to favelas

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – One year after taking the online commerce of goods into seven Brazilian favelas, the giant Americanas wants to repeat the dose for food and other supermarket items.

This month, the company will offer the Paraisópolis community in the southern zone of São Paulo City the possibility of buying groceries without leaving home through the app or website.

The project’s design is the same as the one that started in April last year, also in Paraisópolis.

The company partnered with the logistics company Favela Brasil Xpress, responsible for deliveries in the community, and the organization G10 Favelas to put the communities on the online retail route.

Many e-commerce deliveries did not arrive in the slums for security reasons and stopped at the nearest post office.

The project, however, has broken this barrier. “The results have far exceeded expectations,” says Marco Zolet, executive director of the market and convenience categories at Americanas.

Americanas entered the sale of supermarket products with the purchase of Supermercado Now. Today, 70 supermarket chains are in the company’s marketplace. The new project now opens up opportunities for community store owners.

The first supermarket from Paraisópolis on the platform is Brasileiríssimo. Born in the community, the partner Daniel Cristóvão says he makes about R$200,000 (US$41,000) per month and wants to double the amount with delivery.
