Brazilian President criticizes Supreme Court for acquiting and making Lula da Silva eligible for elections

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said Monday that at the moment of death, everyone will be accountable and that there will not be, “as in the Supreme Court“, those who exculpate you and make you eligible, in a clear allusion to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who recovered his political rights once his corruption convictions were annulled.

“The trial will be for actions and omissions. According to the scriptures, everyone who worked against their neighbor or abstained from helping when he could have, for believers, will have his verdict.

“And there will not be people like some of the Supreme — they are already going to say that I am criticizing the Supreme — to acquit a person and make him eligible,” said Bolsonaro.

The Brazilian president’s words came as he left the Brazilian ambassador’s official residence in London, where he had traveled with first lady Michelle Bolsonaro to attend the state funeral for the death of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey.

“Participate in the mass, be quiet all the time. He who believes knows that one day his day will come. Everyone is going to have their final point here. Everyone without exception,” Bolsonaro said before a group of supporters and journalists whom he criticized for raising the possibility that he was campaigning.

“Why the insistence of wanting to put a thief back in the presidency? Does anyone think it’s a wonder to be president? To throw a thief, with all that gang, out of the presidency,” Bolsonaro has spat, who had assured that Brazil is without corruption “since three and a half years ago” when he was elected president.

Next October, Brazilians are called to the polls to elect their new president after four turbulent years in which Lula da Silva recovered his political rights after his release from prison and the annulment of his convictions in the framework of the Car Wash operation.

The latest poll published by Datafolha on Thursday last week shows that Lula has 45 percent in voting intention for the first round of the elections against Bolsonaro’s 33 percent.
