12 Brazilian cities embark on a smart tourism journey: key insights from the Future Tourism Brazil program

The Future Tourism Brazil Program is entering its next phase in the 12 Brazilian cities chosen to become Smart Tourism Destinations (STD).

These cities are scheduled to partake in workshops for strategic planning and comprehensive analysis through September.

This direction was outlined in a recent meeting held at the Inter-American Development Bank’s (BID) office in São Paulo, where representatives from Sebrae, BID, and GKS Territorial Intelligence, the consultancy overseeing the program, were present.

Ana Clévia Guerreiro, Sebrae’s Tourism Coordinator, emphasized the gathering’s purpose to evaluate the progress in each selected destination.

Since May, she noted, these cities have been receiving technical guidance from GKS Territorial Intelligence, with Sebrae’s support at the state level.

The Future Tourism Brazil Program is a collaborative effort between Sebrae and BID.

It aims to provide planning tools and implement key strategies to reinforce and establish the Smart Tourism Destination initiative in these 12 Brazilian cities.

The participating cities in the STD initiative include

  • Pirenópolis and Bonito in the Central-West;
  • Penedo, São Luís, and Recife in the Northeast;
  • Belém and Novo Airão in the North;
  • Curitiba and Bombinhas in the South; and
  • Belo Horizonte, Ilhabela, and Paraty in the Southeast.

The program was officially launched with the 1st Future Tourism Brazil Program Meeting, held in Curitiba from May 10-12, where an agreement was signed.

Each city went through methodology alignment, engagement in journeys, interviews, and current scenario characterization.

The main objective of this initiative is data management, innovation, sustainability, and user experience, intending to reposition these destinations in the national and international markets, aligning with the preferences of modern travelers.
