U.S. and Saudi Arabia navigate diplomatic path for Israel ties amid geostrategic concerns

The United States and Saudi Arabia are discussing potential terms to normalize Saudi Arabia’s relations with Israel.

This development emerges amid mutual interests concerning security assurances and cooperation on civilian nuclear matters.

In the past months, the US has been optimistic about finalizing the details of this negotiation, potentially resulting in a significant Middle Eastern peace agreement.

This dialogue gained momentum following a meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Among the specifics under discussion are US support for a Saudi civilian nuclear project and security guarantees for Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia also hopes for concessions from Israel concerning establishing a Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, the US emphasizes Saudi Arabia reducing its close ties with China.

Both nations see the current geopolitical moment as ripe for brokering this deal.

While US authorities mention President Joe Biden’s commitment to maintaining US influence in the Middle East—especially concerning Iran and China—it remains uncertain what concessions the US might offer for this agreement.

In return for certain allowances, the Biden administration aims to ensure Saudi Arabia’s economic and military distancing from China.

US officials are particularly concerned about China establishing military bases in Saudi Arabia and the use of Chinese tech giant Huawei’s technologies.

Additionally, the US hopes that Saudi Arabia will utilize the US dollar for oil pricing and seeks to resolve disagreements related to Saudi oil production.

The Saudi Crown Prince has sent mixed signals regarding the deal, emphasizing caution, particularly in dealing with Israel’s current right-leaning government.

Another challenge lies in discerning what concessions Israel might offer the Palestinians in return for improved relations with Saudi Arabia.

While Saudi officials stress the importance of concrete steps towards a Palestinian state, Israeli authorities, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, downplay this aspect in the negotiations.

As of now, the specifics regarding the Palestinian issue remain undetermined.
