India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission nears critical stage

By · August 17, 2023 · 2 min read

India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar expedition has now progressed into its final stages, with the scheduled south pole moon landing on August 23rd.

This significant milestone was marked by the successful detachment of the lander from the propulsion module.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) shared the update on platform X, previously known as Twitter, celebrating the milestone and noting the lander’s imminent descent into a slightly lower orbit.

This mission, initiated on July 14th, could position India as the fourth nation to touch down on the moon, following the USA, Russia, and China.

Additionally, reaching the moon’s south pole would make India the first country to achieve this.

However, there’s a race against time, as Russia’s Luna-25 mission, launched a week prior, has a projected landing window of August 21-23.

Chandrayaan-3 marks India’s third lunar exploration. Its precursor, Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, orbited the moon numerous times without landing.

Remarkably, it identified direct evidence of lunar water, with further analyses in 2018 confirming ice reserves in the moon’s permanently shadowed areas.

ISRO’s 2019 Chandrayaan-2 mission aimed to land on the moon’s south pole but faced technical issues during descent, ultimately failing to land successfully.
