Brazilian Army moves towards domestic production of key Leopard 1A5 BR components

The Brazilian Army’s Manufacturing Directorate (DF) conducted validation tests for national prototypes of the brake (discs and pads) and steering (track pads) systems of the German-origin Leopard 1A5 BR Armored Combat Vehicle (CC VBC).

The tests, which took place between May 30 and June 2, are part of the Army’s strategy to domesticate vital parts of the vehicle.

The parts being tested were developed using local technology by FRAS-LE. The validation activities were carried out at the Randon Technological Center (CTR) tracks in Caxias do Sul-RS.

One of the main objectives of the DF is to oversee the domestication process, focusing on the substitution of critical components that are challenging to source.

This initiative contributes to the increased domestication rates and availability of armored vehicles utilized by the Brazilian Army.

The domestication process is pivotal in ensuring national sovereignty.

It supports the growth and fortification of Brazil’s industry, aligning with the Brazilian Army’s defense requirements.
