During a lecture delivered at the NavalShore 2022 event in Rio de Janeiro, the Navy’s Director General of Material, Fleet Admiral José Augusto Vieira da Cunha de Menezes, revealed that the Brazilian Navy is finalizing negotiations with the Naval Projects Management Company, Emgepron, with a view to the construction of 12 500-ton patrol vessels (NPa500-BR) in Brazil.

This shipbuilding program should last until 2036.

The Brazilian Navy currently has a large inventory of old patrol vessels that need to be urgently replaced.

Analyzing this market, Emgepron decided to invest in designing a 500-ton patrol boat with a local content of about 50% and an estimated value of about $35 million per unit.

One of the highlights of the NPa500-BR will be the customization of the vessel’s armament and equipment package.

The vessel will be 58.9 m long, 9 m wide, 2.5 m maximum draft, and 5.2 m deep.

The project foresees the incorporation of navigation and surface search radars, CMS, and X-band satellite communication.

The armament on board will include GAM-BO1 machine guns (20 mm) and BoforsMk4 cannons (40 mm).
