Market Report

Ibovespa Gains 0.9% to 206,220 on Petrobras | Brazil Market Report, Oct 8

Thursday, October 8, 2026

Key Facts

  • The Ibovespa, Brazil’s main stock index, rose 0.94% to 206,220 points on Thursday 8 October, recovering Wednesday’s loss and ending 0.3% below Monday’s record close of 206,912.
  • Petrobras led the gains: its common shares rose 3.13% and its preferred shares 2.12% as oil jumped, while Vale fell 1.61% on Chinese demand worries (Exame).
  • The real was little changed at 5.02 per US dollar, with the RT close at 5.0200 (+0.07%) and Brazilian press quoting 5.024 (+0.17% to +0.27%).
  • A PoderData poll gives Flávio Bolsonaro 53% of valid votes and Lula 47% for the 25 October runoff, according to CNN Brasil. Interest-rate futures fell on the day.
  • Prediction markets: Polymarket gives Flávio Bolsonaro 85.7% and Lula 13.5% to win the presidency (US$178.0 million traded, as of 8:23 pm ET, 8 October). Bets, not polls.

Today’s Focus

Brazilian stocks rose on Thursday 8 October. The Ibovespa, the main gauge of the São Paulo exchange (B3), gained 0.94% to 206,220 points, after two days of losses.

Oil did the heavy lifting. Crude prices jumped on attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and a hurricane threatening US Gulf output, and Petrobras, the state-controlled oil company, rose about 2% to 3%.

The real held near 5.02 per US dollar. For a US investor, the message is that the election trade, a bet on a market-friendly winner of the 25 October runoff, is still alive.

What matters today. Oil and the runoff polls are now the two forces moving Brazilian assets. Vale and the banks, the other heavyweights, lagged.

01 The session in one read

The Ibovespa closed at 206,220.24 points, up 0.94%. That is 1,918 points above Wednesday’s close of 204,302 and 0.3% below Monday’s record close of 206,912. It traded between 203,985 and 207,954.

Financial volume reached R$40.4 billion (about US$8.0 billion at 5.02 reais per dollar), according to Exame.

The dollar ended near 5.02 reais. RT’s close was 5.0200, up 0.07%. Brazilian press, using the commercial dollar, reported 5.024, up between 0.17% and 0.27% depending on the cut-off time.

Wall Street was mixed. The S&P 500 fell 0.47% and the Nasdaq 1.25%, while the Dow Jones rose 0.10%.

Assessment — Election trade still in play, oil adds fuel MEDIUM

Two forces lifted the index: higher oil prices for Petrobras and a poll lead for Flávio Bolsonaro, whom investors see as friendlier to markets. Interest-rate futures also fell, which helps domestic stocks.

A stock rally built on a poll lead can reverse quickly if the race tightens. We cannot tell from one session how much of the gain is oil and how much is the election.

The session read
The Ibovespa rose 0.94%, with breadth negative — 7 of 15 names higher. Materials led, while Consumer Disc. lagged.

03 Why it moved: oil and the runoff

Oil rose sharply. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark, gained about 3% to roughly US$91 a barrel, with attacks around the Strait of Hormuz and a storm threatening US Gulf production cited as the causes. Petrobras followed: its New York shares rose 2.92% (RT).

The election also helped. A PoderData poll showed Flávio Bolsonaro with 53% of valid votes against 47% for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A strategist told CNN Brasil that the ‘electoral trade remains alive’, citing foreign investors’ positioning after the first round on 4 October.

Exame also pointed to the fiscal-adjustment proposals of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro as a supportive factor.

Four of the five Latin American indices rose on Thursday while Wall Street fell. Brazil’s gain was the largest. Colombia’s COLCAP was the only one to slip.

06 The technical picture

The Ibovespa is again within 0.3% of Monday’s record close of 206,912, and its intraday high of 207,954 stayed below Monday’s peak above 209,000. A close above 206,912 would set a new record.

For the real, 5.00 remains the level traders watch. The day’s range, according to Exame, ran from 5.000 to 5.027.

What Prediction Markets Say

On Polymarket, the Brazil Presidential Election market priced Flávio Bolsonaro at 85.7% and President Lula at 13.5%, with US$178.0 million traded (read at 8:23 pm ET, 8 October). A day earlier, our reading was 83.7% and 15.5%.

Kalshi, a US exchange regulated by the CFTC (the US commodities regulator), also lists Brazilian election contracts. These prices are bets, not polls.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

07 What to watch

  • Runoff polls: Each new poll before the 25 October second round is likely to move the real and bank shares.
  • Oil and the Gulf: A hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and tension near the Strait of Hormuz are driving crude, and with it Petrobras.
  • The 207,000 area: A close above Monday’s record of 206,912 would confirm the rally; a fall below 204,000 would signal a deeper correction.
  • Friday 9 October: The USDA WASDE crop report and weekly US data set the tone for commodities and for Brazilian exporters.
