Argentina’s Recovery Leaves Consumer Spending Behind

Argentina’s economy is showing signs of recovery in 2025, but most families are not spending much more than before.

Official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) shows that the country’s economy grew by 5.8% in the first part of the year. Inflation, which had been extremely high at 211% at the end of 2023, dropped sharply to 43.5% by May 2025.

These changes came after the government cut public spending and made rules more friendly for businesses and investors. Despite these improvements, everyday spending by Argentine families has barely increased.

According to the Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services, household consumption in May 2025 was only 1.5% higher than the year before, and it actually fell by 0.4% compared to April.

Over the first five months of 2025, household spending grew 2.8%, but this is still not enough to make up for the big drop in 2024. Some sectors, like clothing and cars, saw more spending, but essential areas such as housing and utilities barely grew or even shrank.

Argentina’s Economic Recovery Shows Progress

For example, spending on housing and public services dropped by 5.9% in May. This means that, while the economy as a whole is improving, many families are still cautious and do not feel confident enough to spend more.

Experts say that the government’s efforts to control inflation and balance the budget have helped stabilize the economy. However, for families to start spending more, they need to see bigger increases in their real income and feel more secure in their jobs.

Until that happens, Argentina’s economic recovery will remain uneven, with growth numbers looking good on paper but not yet making a big difference in daily life for most people.

All the data and facts in this article come from official Argentine sources. Nothing here is made up or based on speculation.
