Why Brazil’s Femicide Numbers Keep Rising

The final count may still rise because some states had not yet delivered December records to the federal system. The numbers show a long, steady climb. Recorded cases rose from 535 in 2015 to 1,470 in 2025, for 13,448 deaths over ten years.

One national estimate puts the 2025 rate at 0.69 femicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The rise reflects violence, but also sharper classification and reporting. Large states dominate in absolute counts.

São Paulo recorded 233 cases in 2025, followed by Minas Gerais with 139 and Rio de Janeiro with 104. Bahia was close behind with 103. These totals do not adjust for population size, but they show where the system is under the most strain.

Pattern matters as much as totals. Research in recent years repeatedly finds that most femicide victims are killed by a current or former partner. Many killings happen inside the home, after a sequence of threats, assaults, stalking, or coercion.

Studies also show Black women are disproportionately affected. Brazil has not been idle. Courts issued enormous volumes of urgent protective orders, reaching 580,000 in 2024.

Yet breaches remain common, with reporting pointing to violation rates above 18% in 2024. A restraining order helps on paper, but it needs fast policing and real monitoring.

Calls for help also show scale. The federal Ligue 180 hotline recorded 750,687 contacts in 2024, about 2,051 per day. Use of WhatsApp grew after the channel opened.

A major survey estimated 21.4 million women suffered some form of violence in the prior year. In 2024, Brazil made feminicide a standalone crime and raised penalties to 20–40 years.

The tougher law signals seriousness. Still, the core test is practical protection, not symbolic messaging. When shelters, policing, and courts move slowly, the risk stays at the doorstep.

In that sense, the record is not only a statistic. It is a measure of how often the state arrives after the last warning.
