Vehicle sales down 24.5% in October in Brazil -Anfavea

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the balance released yesterday, November 8, in São Paulo, by the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFAVEA), 162,300 units were sold. However, from January through October, there was a 9.5% increase compared to the same period last year, with 1.7 million vehicles sold.

ANFAVEA chairman Luiz Carlos Moraes says the sales contraction in October is a reflection of the challenges faced by the industry, such as the lack of components in a worldwide shortage. The forecast is that these issues will continue to impact the sector’s activities until next year. “2022 will continue to be a year of major challenges in the delivery of semiconductors to the automotive sector,” he added.

TRUCKS

Sales growth throughout the year is mainly driven by the truck sector, which saw a 50.4% increase in registrations from January through October compared to the same period in 2020. During the period 106,300 vehicles were sold, 11,000 of which in October – an increase of 39.7% over the same month in 2020.

Sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles fell 31.1% in October, with 128,700 units. The accumulated number of units sold from January through October reached 1.4 million, up 6.5% compared to the first 10 months of 2020.

Production
Vehicle production also dropped 24.8% in October, compared to the same month last year, with the manufacture of 177,900 units. Between January and October this year, 1.8 million vehicles were produced, up 16.7% over the same period in 2020.

From January through October, the manufacture of trucks posted an increase of 91.2%, with the production of 131,900 units. In October, 24.6% growth was recorded, with the assembly of 13,600 trucks.

The production of automobiles and light commercial vehicles dropped 27.2% in October, with the manufacture of 162,900 units. From January through October, vehicle production reached 1.6 million cars and light commercial vehicles, up 13.4% compared to the first 10 months of 2020.

EXPORTS

Vehicle exports dropped 14.6% in October when compared to the same month last year, with the sale of 29,800 vehicles. In the first 10 months of the year, vehicle sales abroad rose 26.8%, with the sale of 306,800 units.

The level of employment in the industry remained virtually stable at 102,500 workers in October, 0.4% less than in September and 0.2% more than in the same month last year.

According to Moraes, ANFAVEA projections are for 6% growth in the worst-case scenario and 10% in a more optimistic outlook.
