RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Vasco da Gama qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2012 Copa Libertadores after the high drama of a penalty shoot-out against Argentine outfit Lanús last night. The Cariocas had taken the lead in he first half through midfielder Nilton, only to cede their advantage in the second period.
Pavon leveled for the home side before Gutiérrez put them ahead with thirteen minutes left to play. The game finished 2-1, the same scoreline by which Vasco had triumphed at São Januário the previous week.
With the sides not being separated on the away goals rule, the tie went to spot-kicks. Romero hit the cross bar with his effort, allowing Juninho to give Vasco the advantage.
Every other player converted successfully, meaning if Alecsandro converted his penalty, the Brazilians would advance. The burly number nine didn’t disappoint and set up a quarter-final meeting with 2011 Brasileirão champions Corinthians, who knocked-out Emelec yesterday evening.
Tonight, Fluminense host Internacional as they try to join Vasco in the quarters. The first leg finished 0-0 in Porto Alegre.
