The best banks in Brazil: Nubank maintains leadership

By · April 14, 2021 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Forbes published today, April 13, its annual list with the best banks in the world, after a year in which the banking system became crucial gears to get through such a critical moment.

Now the global economy is poised for a big comeback, led by the United States, where gross domestic product is expected to grow by 5%. There, unemployment rates are falling rapidly – the country created almost 1 million jobs last month – and job openings are at record levels.

Consumers, who until then had held back their purchases, have started spending again. Meanwhile, stock markets and real estate transactions continue to reach new heights.

The banks’ spectacular performance is reflected in the list, which, for the third year in a row, is made in partnership with the market research company Statista. Instead of evaluating balance sheets and profit and loss statements, as Forbes does in its ranking of the 100 largest publicly traded U.S. banks published annually, Statista surveyed more than 43,000 customers worldwide to gather opinions about their current and past banking relationships. Banks were evaluated on overall customer satisfaction and attributes such as trust, fees, digital services, and financial advice.

Brazil is one of 28 countries that appear on the list, with a total of 15 financial institutions. Nubank, for the third year in a row, tops the list after a spectacular debut in 2020. In January, the digital bank raised US$400 million in its seventh round of funding, a deal that ranked it among the top five financial institutions in Latin America.

Banco Inter kept second place and Next fourth. Neon, on the other hand, lost two positions and occupies 5th place in the new list. Traditional banks Bradesco and Itaú Unibanco also lost two positions each, while rival Santander rose two places in the ranking.
