RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Carioca Cricket Club (CCC) will be launching their 2018 season on Thursday, February 1st, with drinks and curry at the Aquarela do Leme Hostel, followed by their first intra-club match on Saturday, February 3rd at the club grounds at São Fernando Polo & Cricket Club.

The social event on Thursday starts at 7:30 PM and will be a chance for current club players to sign up for the new year, and for new players interested in cricket at any level to come and meet the team, and sign up.

New CCC President, Lokesh Suri shares some details about the event at Aquarela do Leme Hostel, “Curry will be served at R$35 a head and we’ll be presenting the plans for the 2018 season, the matches, training, tours, etc., and announcing the recent launch of the CCC Ladies team.”

The 2018 calendar for the club is packed, and includes six CCC internal matches at the São Fernando Polo & Cricket Club (near Itaguaí about an hour south of Zona Sul in Rio), a visit of the MCC touring side in March, and a ‘Quick Cricket’ festival at the downtown Zona Sul (South Zone) ground in Lagoa in May.

Also the first round of the National Championships in Brasilia will be in May, then a CCC tour to Poços de Caldas in September, and the second round of the National Championships in Itaguaí in October, as well as a CCC tour to Chile in December.

Suri adds, “Also, the CCC Ladies hope to make their debut at the Ladies National Championships in April, also in Poços de Caldas. [Plus] training nets every other Sunday and most Wednesday evenings. Lots of cricket, lots of fun!”

The first inter-club CCC match of the 2018 season will take place at the cricket ground in Itaguaí on Saturday 3rd February. As usual the club provides free bus transportation to and from the grounds.

The meeting point is at Praça General Osorio in Ipanema at 07:45 AM sharp. After the cricket, a churrasco (barbecue) will be served at the low price of R$40 per head, along with a cash bar.

Club Chairman Tobias Hanbury shares, “Bring swimmers, sun lotion and your tennis rackets. Great days for families with children. Friends, families and cricket fans all welcome. Contact us to reserve your seats on the bus. It’s a great warm up for Carnaval!”

The CCC was founded in 2011, and has grown each year since. Cricket has existed in Rio since the mid-1800s however, when Emperor Dom Pedro II opened Rio’s first official cricket pitch in 1860 on Rua Paysandu in Laranjeiras.
