Full Rundown
The most consequential weekly roda de samba in Rio. The Roda de Samba da Pedra do Sal — celebrating 20 years of uninterrupted Monday programming in 2026 — runs from 7 pm to midnight, free, outdoor, on the cobblestones at the foot of Morro da Conceição in the Saúde port district. The site itself is monumental: tombada em 1984 by the Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Cultural, recognised since 2005 as a remnant urban quilombo, the cradle of carioca urban samba — where Tia Ciata, Donga and Pixinguinha gathered in the early 20th century when the recorded genre was being born. Tonight’s roda is acoustic by tradition: pandeiro, cavaquinho, tantã, surdo, voices, no microphones, no stage — the musicians sit on the steps or on chairs in the Largo João da Baiana, the crowd fills the surrounding streets. Cash for vendors (caipirinha and espetos at street prices). The roda fills past 9 pm; arrive by 7:30 pm for movement room. The dense crowd recommends extra phone awareness; ride-hailing for the return — taxis usually available at Largo João da Baiana, do not walk to find one in the surrounding streets.
The Zona Norte’s anchor Monday roda — and one of Rio’s defining cultural institutions of the past two decades. The Samba do Trabalhador, organised by composer Moacyr Luz, enters its 21st year of uninterrupted Monday-night activity in 2026 at the Renascença Clube, a historic Black social club in Andaraí. The project was honoured on April 16 this year with the Medalha Tiradentes from the Alerj — the highest distinction of the parliamentary fluminense — for its role in carioca cultural identity. The format: bilheteria opens at 4:30 pm, music starts around 5 pm, Moacyr Luz himself joins from 7 pm, the night closes around 10 pm. The full ensemble: Moacyr Luz (voz e violão), Daniel Neves (violão de 7 cordas), Alexandre Nunes (voz e cavaco), Gabriel Cavalcante (voz e cavaco), Nilson Visual (surdo e tamborim), Junior De Oliveira (percussão), Mingo Silva (voz e pandeiro). Past guests across the project’s two-decade history include Zeca Pagodinho, Leci Brandão, Roberta Sá and João Bosco. Entry R$30–40, cash only at the door (“SOMENTE EM DINHEIRO”); advance tickets via Sympla. The crowd is largely local Andaraí and tijucano regulars plus a steady flow of Zona Sul and international visitors. Estação Andaraí (Metro Line 1-Vermelha) is closest, then short walk; ride-hailing strongly recommended for the return after 10 pm.
Lapa’s daily-open boteco institution — operating continuously since 1903. While the surrounding casarões (Carioca da Gema, Rio Scenarium, Beco do Rato) take their weekly Monday rest, the Nova Capela holds the Lapa daily kitchen.
The signature plate is the cabrito assado — slow-roasted with onions and farofa — paired with cold beer. Bolinhos de bacalhau, pastéis, tábua de frios round the menu. No cover, no reservation needed, walk-in tables on a Monday night.
The natural close after either Pedra do Sal or Renascença if you want a third stop on the route. Av. Mem de Sá, 96, between the Beco do Rato and the Carioca da Gema’s location on the same avenue (both dark tonight).
—Note. Plan A — The Pedra do Sal night. Light dinner in Centro or Lapa, walk or taxi to Saúde. Arrive 7:30 pm, stay through 10 pm or close. Taxi back from Largo João da Baiana — do not walk to find a ride.
—Note. Plan B — The Renascença night. Taxi or metro to Andaraí for 5 pm. Stay through Moacyr Luz’s set from 7 pm. Close around 10 pm. The Zona Norte route — different city, different crowd, same samba mission.
—Note. Plan C — The slow Monday. Copacabana boardwalk early, an early dinner in Ipanema or Leblon, an early night. The city’s most rational Monday plan after the long weekend.
—Note. The combined route (ambitious): Renascença from 5 pm for the start of Samba do Trabalhador, taxi out at 8 pm to catch Pedra do Sal in full flight by 9. Two of Brazil’s defining Monday rodas in one night.

—Note. Dark Tonight

—Carioca da Gema. dark Monday — Tue–Sat.
—Beco do Rato. opens Monday only from 18h to 01h with a quieter crowd than its weekend peaks (no specific show, it’s the bar version of the Beco).

—Bip Bip. dark Monday — Tue choro returns.
—Circo Voador. no events tonight. The structure of the carioca week is built around this — the casarões collectively rest Monday, the open-air street takes over. Tomorrow Tuesday May 5: Bip Bip Tuesday choro from 8 pm (the longest-running active permanent choro roda in the city), Blue Note Rio reopens, Carioca da Gema returns Tue with doors 7:30 pm. Wednesday May 6: full Lapa back — Rio Scenarium reopens for Wed–Sat run, Bip Bip Wed bossa nova.

Getting Around
Pedra do Sal: Uruguaiana (Line 1) or Carioca (Line 1/2) plus a 10–15 minute walk through Centro — Carioca is the more pleasant route. Last metro around midnight; ride-hailing for the trip back. Taxis usually available at Largo João da Baiana — do not walk into the surrounding streets to find one. Renascença Clube: Estação Andaraí (Line 1-Vermelha), then a short walk to R. Barão de São Francisco, 54. Ride-hailing strongly recommended for both arrival and return. Metro: Monday operates standard weekday hours. Last trains around midnight. Weather: Mild Monday — 25 °C, 10 % rain. The cold front is passing; tomorrow returns to 28 °C. The Pedra do Sal at 25 °C is near-ideal — light layers for the open-air evening. Ride-hailing: 99 and Uber — Monday surge low across the city. Safety: Rio de Janeiro on a Monday is at its most rested. Saúde around the Pedra: stay near the Largo João da Baiana and main lit streets; the dense crowd recommends extra phone awareness; ride-hailing for the trip back. Andaraí around the Renascença: residential and safe during the event; ride-hailing for the late return. Lapa quieter than weekend nights — Mem de Sá at the Nova Capela end remains active.
